Let Summer Be Summer — I’m Not Ready for Pumpkin Yet

It's that time of year again, when the unmistakable signs of fall begin to appear. The temperatures dip ever so slightly, and the sun sets a little earlier—almost imperceptibly.

While the signs in nature are subtle, stores and social media are anything but. Is it me, or did Halloween marketing start early this year? And why did content creators begin their yearly autumn-themed videos back in July? I'm not ready for a Gilmore Girls fall yet, and I doubt I'm the only one.

It seems that in our fast-paced, perpetually dissatisfied culture, we've become obsessed with what's coming next while forgetting to fully experience what's happening now. This is certainly beneficial to retailers, who can capitalize on ever-expanding seasons and celebrations. But for the rest of us, it can leave us constantly chasing the next thing instead of finding contentment in the present.

When I was a kid, there was a certain magic to the end of summer. Sure, there was some anticipation for the start of the school year. In France, we didn't go back until September, and the approach of a new school year meant the annual shopping trip for new erasers, notebooks, and ink cartridges.

But even that fun expedition was tinged with a little sadness as we counted down the dwindling days of summer vacation.

I think that awareness of time running out made us enjoy those final weeks a little more. We knew summer wouldn't last forever, so we tried to make the most of what was left.

Give me popsicles and ice cream please, not pumpkin bread!

So before we rush headfirst into everything autumn, here are a few simple ways to savor these last weeks of summer:

1. Dry your laundry in the sun.

The sun is called nature's disinfectant for a reason. Plus, you get that wonderful fresh-air smell and save a little electricity in the process.

2. Eat outside while reading.

Enjoy the warm weather while it lasts and read something instead of scrolling on a screen. There will be plenty of time for cozy blankets and indoor reading later.

3. Watch the sunset while listening to the cicadas.

Am I the only one who thinks this is one of the best sounds in the world? There's something about a warm evening, a fading sunset, and the hum of cicadas that feels quintessentially summer.

4. Harvest some late summer fruits and veggies.

Pick something from your own garden, a friend's garden, or a local pick-your-own farm. There is still time to enjoy the last of summer's bounty.

5. Go to the farmers market and buy flowers (and a pastry).

It's a simple way to support a local business while bringing a little beauty home. And let's be honest, the pastry is part of the experience.

Maybe we don't need to rush through the seasons quite so quickly. Maybe we can let summer be summer until it's actually over, rather than allowing advertisements and algorithms convince us that we're already behind.

So, before you start lighting the pumpkin candles and reaching for the chunky sweaters, take a moment to enjoy what's still here.

What are you doing to savor the last days of summer? I'd love to hear your end-of-summer rituals in the comments!
